About BookAddiction

574003_1505258290_1093957565_nI’m an avid reader, bibliophile, book hoarder and lover of all things literary. But I’m not a professional reviewer. I have a full-time job unrelated to books or publishing so reading, book blogging and reviewing are strictly hobby activities and (sadly) have to fit in around other things.  I know far more about pre-legislative scrutiny than is good for the human soul.

For several years I ran a successful secondhand bookshop on line but couldn’t quite bring myself to move away from London to be able to afford the space that growing the business would require, so I went back to being employed full time. These days I ache to be back in bookshop-land.

I love London and enjoy reading about the city and the areas where I live (Wimbledon) and work (Westminster). That passion affects many of my reading choices – always partial to a good story set in the fair city.

Other things I like include horse riding, theatre, cycling, coffee and cooking. The more of these I can enjoy with friends, the better.

    1. Wow, thank you. It’s such a new blog it’s still very small, but how lovely to get some encouragement. I’m so glad you like and thanks for the nomination. I’ll pop over to your place and see what it’s all about.

  1. I just saw that you reviewed Lives of the MonsterDogs by my friend Kirsten Bakis. Would you be interested in taking a look at my second novel, American Neolithic, which is on Kirkus Reviews’ 2014 best of list? If so I’d be happy to send you a copy.

    1. Hi Terence,

Thanks for taking a look at the review of the Lives of the Monster Dogs. It’s been on my mind for a while that I should revisit that review – having re-read the book a couple of months ago I think I missed a few things first time around! I’d be delighted to review your novel (especially if you’d be happy to answer a few questions by email after I’ve read it!). The only thing is that I have a number of books awaiting review at the moment, so I could promise to do it quickly. Drop me an email at jessicamulleyATgmail.com. That’s one impressive list of books on the Kirkus best of – you are in good company.

  3. Hi Marmalisa,
What a lovely comment to come home to – thank you for stopping by my little book blog! I’m glad you enjoyed visiting London – I have enjoyed my two visits to NY as well, although it’s many years now since I’ve been. Next time you’re in London, please do call into our bookshop; we would be delighted to welcome you and show you around. We’re by appointment only at the moment, but hopefully soon will have a proper high street shop.

  4. Hi Book Addict, my name is Larry Rodness, an author of 2 previously published novels, requesting a review on my newest novel entitled, “October 32nd”.
    Synopsis as follows:
October 31st. The quaint little town of Elora, Ontario has held its annual Halloween festival for the past 50 years but this year it takes a terrible turn. A young boy nearly drowns while bobbing for apples. Shortly after, a group of children are attacked by a flock of crows. Local eccentric, Missy Claridge, senses a mysterious connection between the two incidents and warns the town officials to postpone the upcoming festivities. Unfortunately her premonition is ignored and later that evening, all the children in the village suddenly disappear. The townsfolk are baffled. Soon, every person becomes a suspect as residents frantically try to discover what happened to the children and how to get them back.
Please let me know if there is interest and what kind of file you’d prefer.
    Regards, Larry

    1. Hi Larry

That’s so kind of you to get in touch and thanks for telling me about October 32nd (an intriguing title!) I’m afraid though that I don’t read e-books much and never review them. I find reading ebooks so unsatisfying that any review would be unfair.

    Synopsis:
Futharkia is a city built upon the layout of an ancient rune shape, and a foundation of slavery. The Broxanians have been enslaved by the Olgoikhorkian Masters to exploit the Broxanian talent for rune-scribing. In exchange, the rune-scribes are compensated with the sweet, golden liquid, Ichor, that the giant worm-like Olgoikhorkians secrete from their glands. The Ichor also happens to be highly addictive and psychoactive. The system has worked for millennia. However, the Great Fern Jungle that surrounds Futharkia is dying, being bleached white by some unseen force. Coupled with the fact that the simian-like Fern Lice have been hunted to near extinction to provide for Futharkia’s ever-increasing demand for food, the ecosystem is near collapse. It is amid this setting that Cyesko Limariar, an aging rune-scribe makes one last attempt at greatness to lift himself out of poverty, even if by fraudulent means.

It will be available in all e-book formats and I can send you the format you prefer. My book will be available at online retailers.
Here is a brief overview of my book:
Bruno Norcross is a detective who never got over letting a serial killer get away. Now that Kiss of Death has re-surfaced; he is determined to close the case. The death of another young college girl has sparked outrage in Charlie Lassitor, the police Sargent, whose daughter was killed by this very killer. Bruno feels compelled to close this case, but the details get blurred when a new name enters the list of suspects. Can Bruno catch the killer before his killing spree ends and he vanishes again? Or will Kiss of Death once again elude him?
